8 GB Zune Price Drop
The 8 GB Zune dropped $20 in price yesterday to $179.99. This price drop fixes one problem that I had with the Zune pricing which is the fact that the 30 GB AND 8 GB models cost the same amount.
With a price differentiation between the Zune and the Nano now it will be interesting to see if the Zune actually picks up more speed in its attempt to take market share from Apple. The awareness of the Zune has been growing rapidly as well with the mass sponsorships that Microsoft has been paying for recently, the X-Games being the largest example of this. I still think it will take years for anyone to come near the success of the iPod but it is nice to finally see companies providing viable alternatives.

What Microsoft needs to do is expand their accessory assortment. The main problem with the Zune is that there is NOTHING for it. A case here and there, 2, maybe 3 fm transmitters and a sound dock or 2. The Zune itself is a quality product. Even a Microsoft regional exec, whom I met at Best Buy, said he is disappointed with the accessory assortment. My $.02

Keep in mind the accessories generally aren’t made by the first party. Third parties will make stuff for what has the largest portion of the market share, which clearly goes to Apple. To put it another way, if people aren’t buying the device third parties will not make anything for the it.
